Hands up who knew there are actually two Belgian Beer Cafes in Melbourne?
Danni certainly didn’t and this vital piece of information meant she very nearly didn’t meet the love of her life! Danni and Alan met online and planned to meet each other for the first time at the Belgian. By the time Danni had arrived at the Southbank bar after a visit to the St Kilda Rd version, a nervously waiting Alan had already had a few “ogre juices”, so he was quite relaxed for their first meeting and it went very well!
When it came to the proposal, Alan had it all planned out. He had arranged for his mother’s ring to be sent from Scotland and decided to pop the question on the beach during a romantic walk on a secluded Rye beach after dinner. Being summer, unfortunately the beach was crowded with young drinkers so he took her (and little Nessie, their dog) down to the pier which was crowded with old fishermen. Not perturbed, they went back to the beach but Nessie ran off and nearly went over the edge into the water! Alan decided that he’d better just ask and stop waiting for the perfect moment.
After a tough few years for Danni’s family, their wedding at St Carthages Church in Parkville and reception at The Willows was an especially happy event. Alan moved to Melbourne from Scotland just five years ago and so there was a large Scottish contingent among the guests. It was great to see the groom and groomsmen fully decked out in kilts, complete with sgian-dubh, sporran, ghillie brogues and lots of speculation about the possible absence of underwear!
